ThWhatFreshHell ThWursday: forcefedglass - When Backs Are Turned, Knives Are Pulled (1998)

Yes, that is the best image I could find.

Forcefedglass was a band from Cape Cod... until they moved to Virginia. Their sound is like a chaotic clusterfuck with great drumming. Some blast beats, some great metal riffs and a lot of screaming. There are some similarities to early Converge, Barrit, Jesuit, but with a little more sensitivity. All three members on this recording went on to do other bands, but the most notable is Ben Koller who went on to play drums for Converge after they kicked out their drummer (and before they kicked out their second guitarist).

Little known fact, they started out as a joke band and all the lyrics were just references to various metal songs and bands. But then people actually liked forcefedglass so Evan (guitars/vocals pretty much wrote all the songs) did everyone a favor and re-wrote all the lyrics making the band a little bit easier to take serious. Ok, that all could be untrue, but that is what I heard back in the day from a reliable source and I choose to believe it as fact. Especially since the first time I saw that name on a flyer I thought it was a Cannibal Corpse cover band.

Fourteen years later (has it been that long?) and these tracks still hold up. I know there was a discography released so if you like this, get it.

  2. I remember that Evan was a pretty unpopular dude for a while - he sort of barged Forcefedglass onto some tour (Combatwoundedveteran? Reversal of Man? Something like that) and the bands thought he was a total douche.

Now that I mention it, even his own band members thought he was a douche.

  6. Hell yes. The first shirts I ever printed for a band besides my own. Hit me up if you own a crooked silver print on a Navy blue shirt.

  9. Hi everyone, this is Evan from Forcefedglass. I was working on archiving some music and I was looking for some of FFG stuff and stumbled on your site.

It has been fourteen years, crazy! And in all that time I've never clarified exactly what happened with that whole CWV/ROM thing - and I don't know why I should do it now, but I guess I will: The ROM/CWV tour that you're talking about was bringing them through New England while we were on our way out for our own tour. A year earlier, our van broke down in Tampa, and we lived at ROM's house for a week until it could it get fixed. Later, Pat stayed at John's house in Orlando for a while and the idea came up that we should meet up for some shows... the problem was: John or Matt didn't run it by CWV, or the girl from 403 Chaos that was actually booking the tour. All she did was say "here are our shows and contacts." So there it is. A misunderstanding that was never cleared up. Six shows with ROM/CWV that have haunted FFG for fourteen years. After Ohio, ROM/CWV went their way, FFG and Kill the Man Who Questions continued for a week together, then FFG and PG99 went for a week together.

This was the tour that Matt and Jason ended up quitting ROM and going home (and they played at a 3 piece). I fuckin loved that band and it still bothers me to think that I may have had a part in their breakup. A couple years later Matt helped promoted a show for us in Tampa and although I haven't heard from him in years, he and I were friends. As for CWV guys, I never gave them a chance and they never gave us a chance - oddly enough, though, years later I found myself sleeping in Chris' house back in Tampa after a show.

Okay, that's it. I'll talk to you all in 14 more years.
