It's the End of the World As We Know It (I Feel Fine).

If you happen to hang out in the same seedy underbelly of the internet as I do (i.e. mp3 blogs), you have no doubt noticed that there's a lot of doomsday scenarios flying around regarding the future of file-sharing, and the plight of blogs like this one. While the part of me that welcomes total Armageddon is pleased as punch at all the tears and hand wringing (it's like Y2K all over again!), I admit that there is a small part of me that worries I won't be able to have whatever record I want whenever I want it anymore. You probably feel the same way.

If you are not aware of the recent SOPA drama, I suggest dragging yourself out from whatever rock you are hiding under and getting your shit together. Though the bill was shelved for the time being, that didn't stop THE MAN from shutting down one of the largest file-storing sites on the web (Megaupload), and the impact of the blow was enough to shut down several massively popular blogs already. So, where does the lowly little Living Doorway stand? I'll tell you where we stand:

Fuck it. Music existed before the stored digitalization of records and it will exist long after. My goal here was always to make the work day go by faster for myself and others, and dl links are simply a handy byproduct of writing about records that I felt were worth sharing. Even despite the recent Mediafire purge (which I'm sure has has rendered at least 95% of the links on this blog defunct), I have to say that I pretty much don't give a shit - I'll continue to write about music (and all the other garbage I go on and on about) until I decide it's no longer fun or worthwhile. Just don't ask me to re-up any dead links... we're moving forward, not backwards.

Thanks for sticking around, I appreciate each and every one of you... even if you're a fucking asshole.

  2. Jesus fucking Christ man, when I read the title I thought you were going to shut down your blog. It would have completely ruined my evening.

What Mediafire purge are you talking about? I stop downloading music for a few weeks and the whole universe is going topsy-turvy.

    1. Mediafire has pulled a good deal of albums and files from the site since megaupload got shut down. Not all albums but the ones that are bigger hits and would prob draw more attention to the site. They even pulled Android apps might have to pay $7 to put dead space on my girls phone now...fuckin sucks

  4. Just to clarify:

    1) We're not going anywhere

    2) dl links will still be available (until they AREN'T available anymore)

    3) we're still gonna be the best worst blog of all time.

  5. Keep spitting them out and we'll keep reading them.

  6. you keep writing, i'll keep reading.

i think more of the bigger blogs (and the smaller ones, like mine) need your kind of mentality on this topic. "FUCK IT" dont let them win, dont let them take away the creativity within this community. Dont view the recent mediafire/megaupload purging as the 'end of the line'...

besides... there ARE other ways of sharing files, folders, mp3's, ZIP's etc.. it just wont be AS easy.. remember, we can always still share old 90's death metal demos through the good old EMAIL if it comes to that =)

what really kills me about the whole thing is that myself, and probably thousands of other MUSICIANS HAVE UPLOADED THEIR OWN MUSIC TO THESE SITES TO BE SHARED PUBLICLY, and now thats been taken away. To me, thats a breach of MY FREEDOM OF SPEECH. so fucking what if fucking JAY-Z sells a couple thousand more albums next time, the exposure to MY BANDS has been eliminated, the US gov is just singing the same song but using a different pitch this time.. the rich getting richer etc..

    /Rant, sorry JGD ;)

  7. Good for you, dude. I've been a regular visitor and commenter since you began this thing and thanks to you I've discovered countless awesome albums and bands, bands I've actually paid MONEY to see after discovering said music. The internets will always win, the government (a government that cares WAY too much about the needs of a small handful of "entertainment" moguls) and the grandpas running it are always going to be several steps behind, at best. The so-called "recording industry" has and will continue to learn the hard way that nothing lasts forever and that staying abreast of new technology is worth the investment. Back in the 1950's the stars of the radio business cried in their pillows every night about the cruel fate TV bestowed upon them and how unfair it was. Yet, miraculously, life went on and people still made a living in the entertainment business. Adapt or die.

  8. I'm with you man. I think if anything more bands will start giving their shit away and there'll always be a way to share shit online. our days arent even close to being numbered.

  9. You can't stop the signal. Now's a good time to again extend my thanks for all the music you've promoted. You've done good (noun), so whatever happens, happens.

  10. Back in the 19080's, my degenerate metalhead friends and I would go to our favorite local record store and decided who was buying what album. Then we'd pass around our blank cassettes and make copies of each other's purchases. Yet, miraculously, the record industry somehow survived and prospered.

Has the entertainment business offered to reimburse anyone for the various records, 8-tracks, cassettes, VHS tapes, laser discs and etc. they sold you back before technology rendered them obsolete? Thought so.

  11. Damn, never thought I'd see hfs40000 shutdown. I'll still be following you guys and I'm glad you're not done. Thanks for promoting great music and posting amusing write-ups. It's greatly appreciated :)

  12. I agree with your attitude towards this whole thing: fuck it. I will stand strong against all this bullshit from the government and greedy corporations. If Mediafire deletes all my stuff, I'll just reupload it on a different site. If Blogger shuts down my blog, I'll just make another one. Nothing will stop me from providing good obscure shit for the masses to enjoy.

  14. I have my own ethics about this sort of thing but you know I bought the Emerson String Quartet box set, and I'll tell you there is no site on the internet where you can download it without paying. So maybe shutting this stuff down is a good thing overall even if it is bad for you or me. I mean if they stopped making money they'd stop making albums and you know there isn't a single recording of Holst's string quartets anywhere. Paging the Emerson String Quartet. Emerson quartet to the recording booth.

    1. no it´s more that the major four don´t want indie labels to compete.

  15. Glad You're gonna stick around. This blog has managed to successfully criss-cross my nostalgia and current musical interests with a sense of humor that makes it more than a link udder for me to milk anonymously
