I think Detroit might be the worst place on earth. While I have had mercifully little exposure to this terrible, terrible place, I did spend roughly 24 hours there when my old band toured through a bunch of years ago. As far as I can tell, the city is inhabited entirely by thugs, juggalos, and disreputable women. The amount of jarring, crazy shit we saw in just that tiny time frame was simply mind-boggling, and I've never been happier to leave such a depressed, ugly town. I would seriously rather vacation in the ruins of Chernobyl than spend another minute in that foul petri dish of ruined lives. So when I saw that Hedorah's recently submitted EP was entitled 'Detroit', I knew I was in for some ugly shit.
So here's the recipe for some proper Detroit sludgegrind: take that gritty, down-tuned sludge template as laid out by bands like Gaza, add a splash of noisy grind, a pinch of powerviolence, and a whole lot of misanthropy. Tracks like 'A Shallow Grave For Rick Snyder' rumble through some massive doom riffs that rumble through with floor-cracking heaviness, while others go for the throat with filthy angularity. Pretty solid stuff, even if the production is somewhat raw and the EP flies by quicker than a Michigan auto plant going under. Just like their city, there's not a single pretty thing about Hedorah - the disgust seeps from every track - but that's totally expected when you create music in the butthole of America.

Detroit is a shithole, though my friends from there still love it...
ReplyDeleteI want to see these guys play the club I work in the U.P. of Michigan. Of course, Chicago & Minneapolis are both closer than Detroit. Cool to see some Michigan Metal making it out your way though.
i'll listen to any band that name themselves after kaiju at least once.
ReplyDeletemy birthplace. fuck that city. LOVE this ep though.
ReplyDeleteDetroit has always had a pretty solid music scene, I mean what the hell else is there to do in that hell-forsaken place other than go to scuzzy clubs, drink excessively and make a racket? It's like Camden, NJ without the charm.
ReplyDeleteI feel the wicked clown love. I'm definitely down with the clown now!
ReplyDeleteSeriously though, this EP fucking kills.
sounds like my kinda shit. Could just be malware from all the pedonecrobestiality sites I frequent, but there appears to be a large banner ad in the left margin of your page.
ReplyDeletei don't see it, probably a leftover from the blackout html?
ReplyDeleteat work i talk to a lot of people in detroit on a daily basis, 95 percent of them are awful worthless people...if anyone reads this and you are from detroit and arent a shitty person i apologize
ReplyDeleteFuck you (and thanks for the music)

I've never been to Detroit, but how bad can it be if Alice Cooper came out of it? At any rate, I'm liking Hedorah so far. They're almost as awesome as Gaza, and THEY rock to high heaven.
ReplyDeleteI dunno, you couldn't pay me to listen to an Alice Cooper record. The only think I like about him was his cameo in Wayne's World.
ReplyDeleteThanks for this and I'm glad to see they have a Bandcamp page too.
ReplyDeleteI see the large banner ad as well.
ReplyDeleteIt's actually pronounced milla - wah - kay
ReplyDeleteMe too
ReplyDeleteThanks for posting this. Detroit is pretty shitty but at least it turns out shit that sounds good most of the time.
