Tell you what: I'll spare you the technical details of Caring & Killing by just directing you to it's wikipedia page, okay?
There are two types of Converge fans: the ones who got into them after their landmark album Jane Doe was released in 2001, and old hardcore dudes from New England that remember moshing to songs from Halo in a Haystack at some random warehouse in Worcester. I don't know where you stand, but Caring and Killing (along with Petitioning The Empty Sky) was in constant (like, CONSTANT) rotation back in the day. The nostalgia extracted from these songs could power I LOVE THE 90'S for a millennium. Sure, none of this stuff is quite as powerfully executed as their current output (I really do think Axe to Fall is their strongest record since Jane Doe), but I'm surprised how easy it is to listen to this.

Aah yes.... The good old days of baggy jeans, Vision of Disorder windbreakers, bead necklaces, and kickbox-moshpits from Hyannis to Worchester... To be young again hahaha.

ReplyDeleteThe very first Converge material i heard/got was The Poacher Diaries. It spinned so much back in the days.. those hardcore kids today should really get some music education and check some of the older stuff.
ReplyDeleteshows just aren't like that anymore....miss seeing them with overcast, dissolve, coalesce...
ReplyDeleteOh shit! dissolve! I hadn't thought about them in fucking years... My old band played with them a couple times.
DeleteMan that was a long time ago.
what was your band? they used to come to CT like once a month back then.....
ReplyDeleteI played in a kind of grindy HC band from MA called Suicide By Cop. We never amounted to much but we played a bunch of shows and recorded a couple demos between 95-98
DeleteNo such thing as a bad converge album always been down with them from the start. Remember my cousins playin halo in a haystack on cassette way back when. Love the early stuff just as much as the new.
ReplyDeleteI cherish the fuck out of Overcast and Dissolve! Dissolve still plays out once every four or so years. Here's some footage I helped shoot of their 20 year anniversary show in Poughkeepsie this past summer:
